Our interest in personal and home safety began 25 years ago, when we lived in what many people would consider a not-so-nice neighborhood. We were young with four small daughters, and we did what most folks with limited income did back then - we had a dog or two to help alert us to any intruders and had a few cans of mace around the house and in our cars. Babysitters were a concern, and we thought we had good ones. Stories that our adult daughters tell us now indicate that we didn't do so well in that area.
We were fortunate to eventually move out into a country-like setting not far from town, where we didn't need to worry so much..or so we thought. We were off the beaten path, so it was easy to see when there was a strange vehicle in the area. But that was during the day...what about during the night? We still managed to have a few things stolen.
Our daughters became teenagers, and we were doing our best to protect them from others. How naïve we were, never realizing that we also needed to protect them from being typical, rebellious teenagers. This was made shockingly clear to us during our oldest daughter's wedding reception when the best man toasted the newly married couple and reminisced about those times when our daughter snuck out of the house in the middle of the night to have some fun. While everyone laughed, we looked at each other and immediately realized just how blessed we were that nothing harmful happened during those times. We looked at the three other teenagers still living at home, and wondered how we would protect them going forward. We tried, but our adult daughters tell us we didn't do so well there either, even after being forewarned.
It's not just intruders from the outside that you need to worry about. As parents and grandparents, you have a responsibility to your children and grandchildren to protect them from themselves and all that society exposes them to today. What we faced in our younger years is nothing compared to the challenges that children and teenagers face these days.
